About Us

North Dakota has a rich history of progressive prairie populism that has given our nation some of its strongest roots in democracy, equity, opportunity, community and justice. From the farmers of the Non-Partisan League to labor union members to many community activists, North Dakota’s robust political history is full of examples of ordinary people making their voice heard and helping to make North Dakota a great place to live.

In the 1990’s, the North Dakota Progressive Coalition proudly took up the progressive prairie populist banner. Major Coalition successes included a four-year effort resulting in passage of the state’s first economic development accountability law in 2005 and leading local efforts to save Social Security from privatization.

In 2006, the Coalition brought people together to shine a spotlight on the need for more positive leadership. We worked with North Dakotans who spoke out about legislative budgeting that forced years of double digit increases in college tuition and federal policies in 2006 that unnecessarily increased student loan interest rates. Combine that with state political and economic leaders pushing policies that produce low-wage jobs and it all adds up to a negative combination for our future. We know that by working together, North Dakotans can certainly do better than that.

In 2006, we decided it was a good time to build on our successes and grow. Our reorganization resulted in two separate, non-partisan organizations with different missions and different volunteer leadership. One is NDPeople.Org which will carry out a strong, effective advocacy for bedrock North Dakota values. The other is the North Dakota Center for the Public Good, a 501(c)(3), which will facilitate coalition building, provide infromation, and host or support public forums.

It really is up to us – people who live here, work here, raise our families here – to stand up and participate in making our state an even better place for all of us to live. We believe most people want a better life for themselves and their children. One way to get there is to work together on our common ground.

NDPeople.Org advocates for a better future based on common sense and responsibility.  We believe our government should work for us, not against us, so we promote responsible government and effective solutions. We are bringing this positive message into the public debate and encouraging participation.
